- What programs do you offer?
We offer GED Prep, SAT Prep, Academic Prep, English as a Second Language (ESL) and Work Readiness program. Everyone who enters the YWCA of Queens must take a placement test. You can receive a placement test appointment by calling the Office at (718) 353-4553.
- When will classes start?
New classes begin every three months, which means that we enroll every three months. There is a mandatory placement test every three months, and a mandatory orientation prior to the start of classes.
- What is the cost of the Program?
The programs are FREE. There is a membership fee of $60.00 per year. However, the membership fee is waived for low income individuals with proof.
- How long are the programs?
Most of our programs are 10 week sessions except some of our certificate programs.
- How do I qualify for the admission?
You or your family s yearly income and the number of dependents will determine your eligibility. Please give us a call for further information.
- If I don t work, how am I going to prove my income?
A letter from anyone who is besides your parent(s) or a legal guardian who provides you room and board or proof of other financial support can show your eligibility.
- Do you have day and evening classes?
No, we currently have only day classes. Day class sessions are from Monday through Friday. The time is subject to change for each sssion.
- What is the class schedule?
Your class schedule will depend on the program that you are taking. You can discuss the details of the schedule with the director after you have taken the placement test.
- Do you offer job placement?
Yes, there is job placement assistance. We have a full time job developer on staff and counselors who will assist with placement.
- What do I get when I complete the course /program?
After successful completion of the program you will be invited to attend the Awards Night and Graduation ceremonies to receive your certificate of completion, with all the rights and privileges of that program as represented by the State University of New York.
- Why do I have to take the placement test to gain admission?
All participants must take our placement test upon entering the YWCA of Queens. The placement test tells us where you are academically and will help us to place you in the program that is suited to your academic or vocational needs. Upcoming placement test dates can be received by calling the office at (718) 353-4553.
- Do you offer financial assistance or MetroCards?
The programs we offer are free and we provide MetroCards as an incentive for outstanding attendance and participation. Participants are not entitled to Metrocards.
- If I fail the GED test how many times can I retake it?
You may retest three times during the within one year.
- Who will be my counselor?
Counselors are generally assigned to students according to the program in which they are enrolled. Once you successfully register within any program at the YWCA a counselor will be assigned to you.
- Can I take the SAT (Standardized Aptitude Test) test at this site?
No, we are not a SAT test site. If you are interested in taking the SAT please contact www.collegeboard.com/sat for more information.
- Can I take the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) at this site?
No, we are not a CLEP exam site. If you are interested in taking the CLEP exam please contact www.collegeboard.com/clep for more information.
- Are you a GED test site?
No, we are not a GED testing site. We provide support and assistance to participants in obtaining a GED testing date at an official GED testing center.
- How do I get an application for the GED test?
If you are a student enrolled in YWCA GED/Work Readiness Program, your counselor will have you fill out a GED test application. Those who are not participants may go to the New York State Department of Education web site of www.emsc.nysed.gov/ged and download the application and instructions.
- Where are you located?
We are located in Flushing, NY in the YWCA of Queens Building, on the corner of Parsons Blvd. and Ash Ave. Our address is 42-07 Parsons Blvd Flushing, NY 11355.
- How do I get to the YWCA?
We can be easily reached by taking the 7 subway line to the Flushing Main Street station. Then take the Q12 or Q26 in front of the Macy s Department Store to the intersection of Parsons Blvd and Sanford Ave. Another route is to take the Q65 to Parsons Boulevard, then walk north 5 blocks to the YWCA of Queens building.
